Is Bad Style Holding you Back…

When it comes to our style it’s all too easy to fall into a rut.

A string of busy weeks, work & family commitments, impending deadlines and other life demands can mean our style ends up taking a back seat.  Who really has time to plan the perfect outfit when you have a work presentation to prepare, kids to drive to school, a house to tidy, a ton of emails to respond too and a to do list as long as your arm?

Maybe you’ve gained weight recently and instead of taking a cold hard look at your new body size in the mirror it’s easier not to think about your appearance and throw on some baggy clothes instead.

Maybe you’ve been feeling stagnant in your personal or professional life, wanting to make some changes but not knowing where to begin, and your wardrobe has become a reflection of your inner feelings.

Maybe you dread getting dressed in the morning because you feel everything in your wardrobe is outdated or boring.  You feel like somewhere along the way your inner self got lost in the stresses of life and you don’t know how to create a wardrobe that connects to the real you.

Do any of these read familiar? In times like this we tend to grab for the nearest pair of jeans and comfy sweater or opt for the old favorites we’ve worn a million times.  We want something safe, comfortable, convenient and easy.  We tend to detach from the fact we don’t look our best and tell ourselves we can deal with it later or it’s not important for us to look good anyway because we are to old / overweight / busy / past our prime / you fill in the gap.

How to be Stylish

Earlier this week I posted the following quote on my Instagram.

“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers.  And Style is what you choose” Lauren Hutton.

I absolutely love this quote and for the rest of this week I have felt really inspired by the importance of cultivating your own personal style.  Of course being a Stylist, I love fashion and cannot wait to see what new trends are featured on the runway at the start of each season. But something I really love about being a Stylist is helping clients develop their own unique Personal Style.

Being a women with Style goes way beyond the clothes you are wearing. It’s about having pose and sophistication, knowing who you are and what you’re here to say and, most of all, being confident in your own skin.  It’s wearing clothes that embody your personality and character as well as matching perfectly with your lifestyle and future goals.

Women like Audrey Hepburn, Michelle Obama & Alexa Chung are all women celebrated for their timeless style and not only are they beautiful, elegant and always wearing excellent outfits, they are also extremely successful, intelligent and driven women who have made great achievements in their lives.

With this in mind it seems having great Style goes way beyond just looking good and is an important factor in helping us achieve our goals and future ambitions.

Here are my four top tips to help you become more Stylish!

My Fall Fashion Reading List

The first days of October welcome the real start of Fall for us here in Milan.  The days start getting shorter and the weather starts getting colder.  And it’s during this time of the year that I start spending less time traveling and more time snuggled up on the sofa reading books and drinking tea.

I love to use this time of year to read some books that will inspire and educate me, especially on the subject of Style and Fashion, so I am able to offer the best possible advise to my Styling clients and cultivate some interesting ideas for future photo shoots for the coming season.

Here are three books on my reading list for the coming month.  Let me know if you’ve read them and what you think of these reads in the comments below…

Work Wear Style on a Budget

While attending Men’s Fashion Week in Milan this weekend I posted my outfits for the event via Instagram.  I shared with you my inspiration for each outfit and got real with you by revealing which pieces were high-end and which pieces actually came from the high street.

If you didn’t see the posts you can check them out here.

The reason I decided to get real with you is because I think their is a common misunderstanding into thinking that because someone looks really stylish they must have spent a lot of money on their outfit.  And that you have to spend a lot of money on designer pieces in order to be stylish also.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good designer piece! But I think in this world of Instagram and Blogging its easy to buy into the myth that all us fashionistas have a big budget for designer wear, and the reason everyone always looks so stylish is because they are dropping big sums of money on high end pieces for every look.

Of course in some cases this is true but the reality for most of us, for you and me, is that we are want to get out work wear outfits down but we also want to do this on a budget.

We’ve got other stuff to pay for like cars, rent, holidays, travel and saving for the future, am I right?  So here are my Stylist Tips to shopping smarter and getting your work wear style on a budget…
